La carga lesional espinal y la atrofia de la médula espinal podrían contribuir a la discapacidad de las personas con Esclerosis Múltiple progresiva. 

Un equipo de investigación de la University College London estudió si el nivel de daño causado por las lesiones en la médula espinal (al que se hará referencia como carga lesional espinal en el resto de este artículo) está asociado con la discapacidad en la Esclerosis Múltiple.

El equipo utilizó una nueva técnica de imagen por resonancia magnética (IRM) para visualizar e investigar mejor las lesiones de la médula espinal. Utilizaron esta técnica en 120 personas: 34 con Esclerosis Múltipe recurrente-remitente, 29 con secundaria progresiva, 29 con primaria progresiva, y 28 controles.

La carga lesional espinal fue significativamente más elevada en pacientes con Esclerosis Múltiple primaria y secundaria progresiva que en pacientes con Esclerosis Múltiple recurrente-remitente. 

ATROFIA

Los investigadores estudiaron el total de la carga lesional espinal y de la atrofia de la médula espinal cervical.

Mostraron que la atrofia de la médula espinal y las mediciones de la carga lesional no diferían de manera significativa entre la Esclerosis Múltiple primaria y la secundaria progresiva, pero eran más elevadas que en los pacientes con Esclerosis Múltipel recurrente-remitente. Además, tanto la atrofia de la médula espinal como la carga lesional se asociaban de manera independiente con la discapacidad.

Este estudio muestra que es plausible que la carga lesional espinal y la atrofia de la médula espinal contribuyan a la discapacidad en personas con Esclerosis Múltiple progresiva.

Es necesaria la realización de estudios longitudinales (estudios que observan a pacientes con Esclerosis Múltiple a lo largo de muchos años) para comprender la evolución de la carga lesional espinal en la Esclerosis Múltiple, y para tomar en consideración su potencial en cuanto a la medición de resultados en ensayos clínicos.
