Un estudio muestra que la vitamina D afecta al desarrollo y a la diferenciación del sistema nervioso central.

Se ha relacionado la exposición a niveles bajos de luz solar con un riesgo elevado de sufrir Esclerosis Múltiple. Dado que la exposición a la luz solar produce vitamina D, este riesgo se ha atribuido a una producción insuficiente de vitamina D.

De esta manera, se ha sugerido que las personas afectadas por Esclerosis Múltiple, en especial aquellas que viven en países con una baja exposición a la luz solar, podrían beneficiarse de la ingestión de suplementos de vitamina D.

Unos investigadores de la Thomas Jefferson University en la Universidad de Filadelfia estudiaron el efecto de diversas concentraciones de vitamina D en las células madre neuronales de ratones. (Las células madre neuronales son importantes, ya que pueden convertirse en neuronas y en oligodendrocitos, las células que producen mielina en el cerebro.)

Los investigadores aislaron las células madre neuronales del cerebro de los ratones y dejaron que estas células crecieran con y sin vitamina D.

El estudio mostró que la vitamina D impulsa directamente la proliferación y la transformación de células madre neuronales en oligodendrocitos. Los resultados muestran un efecto directo de la vitamina D en el desarrollo y la diferenciación del sistema nervioso central y, por tanto, en la neuroregeneración y la reparación.
