La Esclerosis Múltiple se suele considerar como una patología que se da únicamente en adultos, pero los niños y adolescentes también pueden desarrollarla. Expertos en el tema han puesto de relieve los avances, preguntas sin respuesta y nuevos retos en su comprensión, diagnóstico y gestión. 

 

El diagnóstico de la Esclerosis Múltiple en los niños es más difícil que en los adultos debido a la frecuencia de otros trastornos de la infancia con síntomas y características similares. Sin embargo, la comprensión de la Esclerosis Múltiple y otras enfermedades desmielinizantes en la infancia ha avanzado considerablemente en los últimos diez años.

El International Pediatric MS Study Group (una red global de neurólogos de adultos y pediátricos, científicos y otros profesionales de la salud) han escrito una serie de artículos, destacando los avances, preguntas sin respuesta y nuevos retos en la comprensión, diagnóstico y tratamiento. 

La Federación Internacional de EM (MSIF) ha elaborado una publicación breve que resume los puntos clave de cada uno de estos artículos, con enlaces a los artículos completos. Se llama ‘La EM pediátrica y otros trastornos  desmielinizantes en la infancia: Conocimiento, diagnóstico y manejo actuales’. Esta publicación está dirigida a las personas con algún conocimiento previo de la Esclerosis Múltiple en los niños, pero está escrito en un lenguaje sencillo y accesible. También la MSIF ha publicado un manual para los padres con niños con Esclerosis Múltiple. Esta publicación se llama: ‘La EM en la infancia: Guía para los padres’, que tiene como objetivo ayudar a entender más sobre el cuidado que un niño con Esclerosis Múltiple debe recibir, y el tipo de apoyo que necesitan los padres y las familias a fin de gestionar los cambios que la Esclerosis Múltiple puede traer.
