El Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB) acogió durante la mañana del 6 de octubre la Jornada Internacional ‘Living with MS Day’, en la que participaron 650 personas con Esclerosis Múltiple y familiares con el fin de intercambiar experiencias y mejorar el conocimiento y la gestión de la enfermedad a través de las ponencias de expertos internacionales.
La jornada fue organizada conjuntamente por la Asociación Española de Esclerosis Múltiple (AEDEM-COCEMFE), Esclerosis Múltiple España (EME) y la Federación Internacional de Esclerosis Múltiple (MSIF) y como antesala del XXXI Congreso del Comité Europeo para el Tratamiento y la Investigación en Esclerosis Múltiple (ECTRIMS), que reunió a casi 9.000 neurólogos e investigadores de esta enfermedad.
Algunas conclusiones derivadas de este encuentro son la constatación de que el paciente de Esclerosis Múltiple se está convirtiendo en experto de su enfermedad, participando junto al neurólogo en la toma de decisiones sobre su tratamiento. Asimismo, que el estilo de vida y el bienestar general de los afectados pueden tener un impacto positivo en el desarrollo de su enfermedad. La motivación es clave para la mejora, pues los pacientes que promueven su salud física y mental tienen menor riesgo de adquirir discapacidad. Se confirmó la importancia de cuidar la alimentación, el ejercicio y los hábitos de sueño.
En lo referente a investigación, se habló especialmente de la Esclerosis Múltiple Progresiva, para la que se están llevando a cabo muchos ensayos clínicos para detectar posibles tratamientos que frenen la progresión de este tipo de Esclerosis Múltiple de la que, hasta el momento, no se cuenta con ningún tratamiento efectivo. A pesar de ello, se están produciendo grandes avances que van a cambiar este panorama.
Por otra parte, se dio la bienvenida a la tripulación del velero danés ‘Oceans of Hope’ que llegó a Barcelona un día antes, el 5 de octubre, donde finalizó su primera vuelta al mundo para concienciar sobre la Esclerosis Múltiple . El barco, con una tripulación internacional de más de un centenar de personas con Esclerosis Múltiple , ha viajado durante más de un año con el objetivo de cambiar la percepción de la enfermedad, mostrando lo que es posible hacer cuando las personas que conviven con una afectación crónica se sienten capaces de afrontar sus retos personales.
