El martes 15 de marzo, el presidente Gerardo García Perales, acudió a la presentación en Madrid de los resultados del estudio “Las enfermedades neurodegenerativas en España y su impacto económico y social”.

Este estudio ha sido realizado por la Neuroalianza y la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, está avalado por el Ministerio de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad y se ha realizado gracias a la colaboración de NOVARTIS.

 

El estudio tiene como objetivo contar con datos actualizados que posibiliten el diseño y la aplicación de políticas y actuaciones a largo plazo en el ámbito de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas. La investigación buscaba conocer el impacto económico y social que tienen estas patologías, que en su conjunto afectan a cerca de 988.000 personas en España (2% de la población), por lo que el coste total que asumen afectados y familiares ascendería a 32.372 millones de euros en España. No obstante, los autores admiten que su prevalencia puede dispararse en los próximos años como consecuencia del progresivo envejecimiento de la población, que hará que en el año 2050 más de un 30 por ciento de la población tenga más de 65 años.

 

Sus principales conclusiones han sido:

– El estudio sitúa la prevalencia de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas en el 2,08% de la población española, lo que supone un total de 988.000 personas afectadas por patologías como el Alzheimer y otras demencias, el Parkinson, la esclerosis múltiple, las enfermedades neuromusculares o ELA (esclerosis lateral amiotrófica).

– En relación a los gastos directamente soportados por las personas afectadas y sus familias, el estudio concluye que el coste medio anual de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas en España fue de 23.354 € por afectado en 2015. 

Además se ha llevado a cabo un análisis detallado de los costes directos e indirectos asociados a estas patologías. Los resultados apuntan a un coste directo medio al cabo del año de 13.063 €. Por otro lado, el estudio también pone de manifiesto la carga de los gastos indirectos soportados por las personas afectadas. Por ejemplo, el cuidador incurre en una media de gasto, como consecuencia de las tareas que realiza (fisioterapia, medicamentos, etc.), de un total de 151€ al mes. Por otro lado, la pérdida de ingresos medios que sufre el cuidador, motivada por las tareas de cuidado, comparando los ingresos que tenía antes y después de la enfermedad es de 453€ al mes. La suma de ambas cantidades resulta en unos costes indirectos de 604 € mensuales. Los costes indirectos anuales fueron de 7.248 € en 2015.

Los pacientes, acuden a las asociaciones para cubrir estas necesidades: hasta un 46% reciben estos tratamientos a través de las asociaciones de pacientes y el 43% a través de servicios privados.

– El impacto de los síntomas físicos y cognitivos de estas patologías tienen, sin duda, una gran repercusión en el ámbito laboral y por lo tanto económico de los pacientes. Según los resultados del estudio: el 72% de las personas afectadas que forman parte de la población ocupada han estado de baja laboral debido a su enfermedad. Un 58% han tenido problemas para rendir adecuadamente en el desempeño de su ocupación debido a su enfermedad. El 22% han necesitado reducir su jornada laboral a causa de la enfermedad. Y, además, el 40% de los no ocupados tuvieron que dejar de trabajar o estudiar, y un 2% adicional no lo han podido hacer nunca.

– El papel del cuidador es fundamental en las enfermedades neurodegenerativas, en este sentido, la investigación también ha analizado la repercusión en el cuidador tanto en el nivel de dedicación como en el impacto en la actividad laboral.

De hecho, se estima que se invierte una media de 60 horas semanales en la atención a los cuidados: los varones invierten una media de 9 horas diarias de cuidado y las mujeres 12 horas diarias.

El 82% de las mujeres cuidadoras están en edad de trabajar, tienen entre 19 y 65 años; por el contrario, la mayoría de los cuidadores varones son jubilados. El 35% de los cuidadores comparten esta condición con un trabajo remunerado.

En el ámbito laboral, el 40% de los cuidadores admite tener problemas económicos derivados de su labor como cuidador. El 27% considera que su vida profesional se ha resentido por el mismo motivo, existiendo un 11% que ha tenido que dejar de trabajar. En el 13% de los casos, algún otro miembro de la familia ha tenido que dejar de trabajar o estudiar de manera total o parcial para dedicarse al cuidado de la persona afectada. Por último, el 60% de los cuidadores toman medicamentos o reciben servicios de rehabilitación o fisioterapia como consecuencia directa de sus tareas de cuidado.
